Jeg fant et reisebrev som jeg skrev mens jeg var i Cambridge i 2019 og den fikk jeg lyst å dele her på min blogg, så here you go!
Impressions of Cambridge
This city has really amazed me. It is a beautiful city full of history, knowledge, and impressive architecture. I also think that the city has a kind of mysticism, especially when you walk between the buildings and narrow stone streets. Every time I walked through those small streets I tried to imagine what was happening on the other side of the walls. Has anyone discovered something important for the science? Are they just sleeping? Is there a new love story? I don`t know, I am a curious creature and have a lot of imagination. However, If I understood well, the college system is very flexible, it is just like living in another normal university village. However, I do think that the restricted access to the colleges for no members gives the impression there is some sort of secret life inside there. Despite maybe the mystery of a secret life, if you do some research on the Internet you will find a lot of information about what it is like to live in a college in Cambridge and how what the rooms look like and how life is on the other side of the walls.
Furthermore, the colleges are incredible inside, with lovely gardens and charming libraries. They are kind of small and magical castles. No wonder these places inspired so many people who had made great scientific discoveries and written a lot of outstanding pieces of literature as well.
The city by itself is not so big, but because of those magnificent buildings and great green areas it gives you the feeling of a big city, but at the same time, you feel embraced by a small and cozy place. Another thing that has impressed me is how many different restaurants you can find in Cambridge. There is everything! I didn’t expect to find so many options for food in town. And what I like the most is that there are not so many big and well-known food chains. The city is surrounded by a lot of different local restaurants. Cambridge has a perfect circular economy!
In other words, as a friend of mine wrote to me last night, it is difficult to take bad photos of such a great city. However, likewise in most big cities, there are some dark sides. What I have noticed while I was walking around the city is the huge amount of homeless people. In my opinion, this is the
saddest side of Cambridge. What I mean is that if we consider the size of the city related to the number of homeless people I have seen in town, there are actually way too many. Doing a quick online research, I found that last year there were 159 homeless people. That means that one in every 784 people in Cambridge are homeless. Isn´t that shocking?
Tomorrow I am heading back home, and I will take my stay in Cambridge as one of my treasured stays. The whole experience has been fantastic, my English classes at the EF institute were exactly what I needed. Having such great teachers, and classmates and the wonderful service from all the staff made my week so perfect. I am going back home feeling much more confident with my English and I am glad I now have a better idea of what I should continue working on and practicing.
